I've noticed there are basically differing specialties branching out from your I1 meatshields, and they branch off to various niches, infantry, skirmisher, cav, etc, as well as "upgraded" versions of those niches further down the line you choose, but also branches that seem less specialized and overall worse at a certain task than the unit type suited specifically to that task, as you have notedįrom what I've gleamed from the in game explanation and from a bit of exploring the trees is that the more inferior / repetitive units serve the role of "flexibility" and diversity your troops. In the Notes tab if you go to Game Concepts there is an explanation to the troop trees there that makes a bit of sense. I play floris exclusively and was daunted at first by the troop trees but they seem decent to me. What is even the point of all these over lapping unit types that don't have any distinction between them outside being inferior to other units of their same tier? The small negative of not having a shield is complete overwritten by the retinue being able to out shoot everything but other T7 ranged units, while still being a monster in close combat. But again both of these pale to the T7 Retinue Longbowman Which is on the same route as the Skirmisher even, but save for a lack of a shield, it has way better armor, better weapons, and FAR better proficiency (301 bow to 229). Looking at their stats you will clearly see the Skirmisher is just better in every aspect, better melee skills, better range proficiency, and almost identical equipment. But then they also have the T5 Skirmisher with just a bow and 1h+shield. A T5 Sheriff, with a bow, and either a polearm or 1h+shield. So why would you ever use a Lancer, when the Chevalier brings the same thing, but also turns into an even better unit later. The only difference between the two is the Chevalier upgrades into the T7 Baron Mineures.

For example, the Swadian Lancer is a T6 cavalry unit armed with a lance, 1h and heavy horse and armor, but they also have the Swadian Chevalier Banneret, which is a T6 cavalry unit armed with the exact same lance, 1h, heavy horse and armor. The thing though is many trees have LOTS of over lap in units, and it just doesn't appear to be anything more unique about them compared to the other units in the tree. Swadia technically has a horse archer unit, but it's just war darts without any points in horse archery. There are some exceptions, such as Nords not having cavalry or any real ranged units. Typically in all the troop trees you'll have a ranged unit, heavy impact cavalry, horse archers, light cavalry, line infantry, shock infantry, pike/spear infantry.
